Attention - The National Data Network (NDN) is now closed.

The NDN has recently undergone a review process. Most of the development to date has been done in demonstration/pilot mode. As a result of the reviews the ABS has decided to bring the pilot phase to a close and cease further development on the network. This includes the Children and Youth Statistical Portal.

The vision of accessing and sharing of data is still very alive and the ABS will be focusing on expansion of the National Statistical Service (NSS). There are now other initiatives being pursued that have some similar objectives to those of the NDN. The ABS is seeking to engage with those driving these initiatives to look for opportunities to collaborate in ways that will achieve their objectives while also furthering those of the NSS. We will continue to develop strategies for 'whole of government' information sharing. Our focus will be largely on improving metadata systems. Realistic scenarios for the different business uses of metadata will be developed in active consultation with other agencies.

Please contact Narelle Budd on (02) 6252 7636 or email inquiries@nss.gov.au if you require further information.

NDN Pilot Phase

The National Data Network (NDN) is being developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on behalf of a consortium of agencies to provide trusted infrastructure for the sharing of data and associated tools and services, relevant to policy and research across sectors and jurisdictions. The pilot phase of the NDN commenced in July 2007 with the first pilot already underway: the Children and Youth Statistical Portal.

Meetings with senior agency representatives were undertaken in March 07 to follow up from the Federal Agency letter distributed by the ABS in December 2006. Agency representatives expressed a commitment to contribute to the development of the C&YSP by providing metadata for publicly available information resources during the course of the pilot phase. The ABS will provide an initial set of metadata based on the contents of the Children and Youth Information Development Plan (ABS cat. no. 4907.0) for the portal release.

Pilot Projects will be identified from existing communities of interest which require greater visibility/accessibility of relevant information resources and:
a. Custodians are amenable to achieving greater visibility/ accessibility
b. issues, over and above those that the NDN technology can address, can be progressed in a reasonable timeframe
c. a number of researchers and or policy analysts are ready to be involved
d. resources are available to engage the Custodians involved and work through the issues to achieve progress
e. there is commitment on the part of the NDN Interim Governing Board to lend their support.

As the phase progresses, this range will increase as the number of source organisations and what they offer via the NDN is augmented.
For further information about the progress of the NDN please contact the NDN Business Office or subscribe to our newsletter for regular updates.
