| Attention - The National Data Network (NDN) is now closed.
The NDN has recently undergone a review process. Most of the development to date has been done in demonstration/pilot mode. As a result of the reviews the ABS has decided to bring the pilot phase to a close and cease further development on the network. This includes the Children and Youth Statistical Portal.
The vision of accessing and sharing of data is still very alive and the ABS will be focusing on expansion of the National Statistical Service (NSS). There are now other initiatives being pursued that have some similar objectives to those of the NDN. The ABS is seeking to engage with those driving these initiatives to look for opportunities to collaborate in ways that will achieve their objectives while also furthering those of the NSS. We will continue to develop strategies for 'whole of government' information sharing. Our focus will be largely on improving metadata systems. Realistic scenarios for the different business uses of metadata will be developed in active consultation with other agencies.

What is the NDN
Vision
The NDN vision is for the best utilisation of, and return on investment from, survey and administrative information resources
by:
a. providing Users (eg planners, researchers, policy analysts, project managers, evaluators) with an improved means of finding and accessing information resources, particularly those information resources that aren't publicly available, and
b. providing Custodians of information resources with a means of giving greater visibility and wider access to their information resources, while continuing to give close attention to access and use conditions.
Overarching Strategy
The overarching strategy of the NDN is to:
a. develop low cost infrastructure that:
i. enables Custodians to:
- more easily respond to the ever increasing User demand for information
- adopt improved data management and access arrangements
- better align with statistical standards and thereby more easily integrate their information resources with others, through the use of NDN tools and other NDN services,
ii. enables Users to:
- be aware of existing information resources
- access a range of NDN-based analytical tools and services for effective and low cost access and use of information resources.
The NDN comprises of a central administrative hub, a centralised metadata catalogue and a participant facility to publish resources and register users (nodes). |
